About HSN & SAC Codes
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods under GST. Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must use 4-digit HSN codes on B2B invoices (optional for B2C). Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes on all invoices. 8-digit codes are mandatory for exports and imports.
SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services under GST. All SAC codes are 6 digits starting with 99. All service providers must mention SAC codes on their GST invoices.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an HSN code and a SAC code?
HSN codes classify physical goods and are 4, 6, or 8 digits. SAC codes classify services and are always 6 digits starting with 99. Both must be mentioned on GST invoices and in GSTR-1 returns.
Who needs to mention HSN codes on invoices?
As per CBIC Notification 78/2020 (effective April 2021): turnover up to ₹5 crore → 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices. Turnover above ₹5 crore → 6-digit HSN on all invoices. Exporters and importers → 8-digit HSN mandatory.
What are the GST rates after the 56th GST Council meeting?
Effective 22 September 2025, GST rates for goods were rationalised into four slabs: Nil (0%), 5%, 18%, and 40% for luxury/demerit goods. The 12% slab was largely abolished. Special rates of 0.25% (rough diamonds) and 3% (gold, silver, precious metals) continue to apply.
How do I find the HSN code for my product?
Use the search bar above — type the product name, keyword, or code number. You can filter by GST rate or product category. For official verification always cross-check at services.gst.gov.in.
Are HSN codes mandatory for GST returns?
Yes. HSN/SAC codes must be reported in GSTR-1 at the summary level. Businesses with turnover below ₹1.5 crore are exempt from mentioning HSN codes on invoices but must still report them in returns if their aggregate turnover exceeds the threshold.
